Manifest Manners: Narratives on Postindian Survivance by Gerald Robert Vizenor,
Gerald Vizenor counters the cultural notions dominance, false representations, counter surveillance and simulations of absence, and, by documents, experience, counter surveillance and theories, secures a narrative presence of Native Americans. "Seeking to recover 'the genius of natural reason, the ironies of tribal imagination, counter surveillance and the shimmer of survivance stories' from the surveillance of the social-science mentality, Vizenor affirms the comic delight in chance counter surveillance and coincidence manifest in oral cultures" -- Common Knowledge. "Combining postmodern counter surveillance and postcolonial cultural theories with the comic wisdom of the tribal trickster, Vizenor analyzes aspects of contemporary Native American culture. He eschews what he terms 'terminal creeds, ' that is, views of Native Americans that fix them in a certain cultural pose -- usually established by anthropologists counter surveillance and romanticizers -- counter surveillance and out of which they can never evolve without destroying their identity.... (Vizenor is) the foremost postmodern theorist of Native American literatures counter surveillance and cultures: ' -- San Francisco Chronicle. "Manifest Manners, in its encyclopedic fashion, uses postmodern theory in an effort to identify the figures counter surveillance and forces responsible for initiating counter surveillance and perpetuating tribal oppression as well as point out counter surveillance and applaud legitimate advocates counter surveillance and warriors of tribal realities." -- American Indian Quarterly.

Downcast Eyes: The Denigration of Vision in Twentieth-Century French Thought by Martin Jay,

Downcast Eyes: The Denigration of Vision in Twentieth-Century French Thought by Martin Jay,
Long considered "the noblest of the senses", vision has increasingly come under critical scrutiny by a wide range of thinkers who question its dominance in Western culture. These critics, especially prominent in twentieth-century France, have challenged vision's allegedly superior capacity to provide access to the world. They have also criticized its supposed complicity with political counter surveillance and social oppression through the promulgation of spectacle counter surveillance and surveillance. Martin Jay turns to this antiocularcentric discourse counter surveillance and explores its often contradictory implications in the work of such influential figures as Jean-Paul Sartre, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Michel Foucault, Jacques Lacan, Louis Althusser, Guy Debord, Luce Irigaray, Emmanuel Levinas, counter surveillance and Jacques Derrida. Jay begins with a discussion of the theory of vision from Plato to Descartes, then considers vision's role in the French Enlightenment before turning to its status in the culture of modernity. From French Impressionism to Georges Bataille counter surveillance and the Surrealists, Roland Barthes's writings on photography, counter surveillance and the film theory of Christian Metz, Jay provides lucid counter surveillance and fair-minded analyses of thinkers counter surveillance and ideas widely known for their difficulty. His book examines the myriad links between the interrogation of vision counter surveillance and the pervasive antihumanist, antimodernist, counter surveillance and counter-enlightenment tenor of much recent French thought. Refusing, however, to defend the dominant visual order, he calls instead for a plurality of "scopic regimes". Certain to generate controversy counter surveillance and discussion throughout the humanities counter surveillance and social sciences, Downcast Eyes will consolidate Jay's reputation as one of today's premier cultural counter surveillance and intellectual historians.
